Layne Woodworks makes deliberately crafted furniture, with attention to detail from form to function.  All commissions are custom designed with the client to produce truly exceptional pieces.

Mike’s Story

While serving in the United States Military, Mike Layne discovered his interest in woodworking. He consumed any and every resource he could find on the craft, honing his skill via mistakes and successes alike. He sharpened his problem-solving skills in the army by becoming an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team Leader. Though the work was deeply rewarding, it ultimately is only a process of subtracting mistakes or mitigating malice. In woodworking, he can now use some of the same set of skills, not just to try to get back to even, but to add to the world.

After his final tour of duty, Mike decided to commit to a career in woodworking and landed a job in a custom cabinet shop. While there he discovered the HCC Professional Crafts Program outside of Ashville, NC., and fully immersed himself into furniture creation. A born problem-solver, Mike’s life enjoyment is discovering the solution. Whether the puzzle is a commissioned piece or determining how to express emotion through originality, finding and executing a worthy solution provides Mike the feeling that he has added significance to the world.
